Monday 26th August – bike ***** Sunrise special – Around Felixstowe – sunny and hot.

After Saturday’s early morning bike ride, we decided to go one better today and go for a sunrise bike ride, I checked the time last night and found it was just before 6. So, when I woke at 5, we were on, actually got up at 5.20 and while Mag heated the Almond Croissants, we are not going on another early bike ride without any breakfast with us, I sorted out the bikes. We were down on the very quiet prom at 5.45 with a nice sky already colouring up but with a bank of hazy low cloud sunrise might be a fraction later? After a couple of pics near the pier we carried onto The Fludgers and we have never seen so many campers staying the night, including a trailer tent with electric cables from probably a small generator. We are big advocators of ‘wild’ camping having spent 1200 nights away in our small VW with 99% wild but some of these are taking the micky leaving loads of stuff on the prom4 hours, covering 14 miles with a top speed of 21.74 knots and towels to dry on the prom handrails, if they are not careful the council will put a stop to it especially if the local residents complain:( With the sun still not showing we carry on but on reaching the cliff top at Brackenbury Green the red ball is just starting to peak out. We cross the green and sit on the last seat for our cuppa and yummy warm almond croissant enjoying a lovely sunrise:) I take loads of pics including going down the now closed steep steps to the prom. A nice lady from the first beach hut who has driven from Ipswich to see the sunrise chats with us for ages! There are a few people who have come down especially to watch the Bank Holiday sunrise plus the odd dogwalker and fisherman! With the sun now well up and the colour going all wishy washy we continue to The Dip where we drop down on the prom ending up once again at the lovely Felixstowe Ferry. The ride along the seafront was nothing special as there was a bit of a breeze on the water but once at the Ferry the River Deben was like a mill pool bathed in beautiful warm light, a photographer dream, I must have taken hundreds of pics here but never tire as it is stunning:) Another trip around the boat yard where the boats sit in still blue water and you cant tell where the water finishes and the sky starts, just perfect! Then it is out on the River Deben path with dew covered cobwebs everywhere with yellow dandelions by the path and noisy gull out on the river. Passing Kingsfleet we continue on the bumpy sea wall for another mile before turning off inland ending up at another favourite, Flakenham Church where we take a rest with ‘Emily’ a young lady buried in the churchyard in the 1800’s! A local turns up on his mobility scooter and we pass the time of day with him for awhile before continuing on country lanes and foot paths, through The Grove wood and home. So another 5 star bike ride, out for 4 hours, covering 14 miles and home for another breakfast, porridge this time, dozing, reading and doing my exercises in the garden before some old friends come around in the afternoon for tea and homemade cake – top day away from the maddening crowds:)
